Why Do I Write?

A Quick Background on my Writing Experiences

My passion for writing began in tenth grade English with Mr. Discher, who graduated from the University of Michigan. My origin piece, The Joy of Soccer, was born out of this class, utilizing the Hemingway writing style. The original piece included a short, choppy sentence structure and an extended focus on setting (think Old Man and the Sea). My love for writing was born out of necessity. I am not a naturally creative person (you should see me attempt to play Pictionary), so writing became my creative outlet. I began my college writing experience with academic writing. My professor allowed us to choose our own research topic to focus on throughout the semester. I researched marginalization in sports based on race and sex, and thoroughly enjoyed the class.

This year, I was introduced to the writing minor from a random email sent to students who had taken at least two college writing courses. Choosing to minor in writing allowed the opportunity to write outside of an academic context, something I haven’t been able to do since high school.
